Now more than ever, there is pressure to return to the 9-to-5 office routine. And, it’s being met with resistance big time. As we continue hang on as hard as we can, now is the time to refresh the rules for working from home (i.e.: get dressed, set a schedule, have a designated work space, etc.), that will enable the renegade advantages we have come to know and love.
- Your feet can be in whatever they like. There are a lot of UGG slippers working overtime right now.
- Eyelids drooping after lunch? This is a common malady. Now you’re free to sneak in that ten-minute catnap and return refreshed and ready to go. No one will ever know.
- What about snacks? No need to wait for mealtime to take a brief cupboard raid for just the right boost. There’s nothing like a little fresh popcorn to get you back on track.
- Ahhh, the comfort of your favorite clothes that have been your constants for the last two years and counting.
- Don’t forget exercise. You can do it whenever and how ever you want. Mute the sound and hop on that treadmill for your next conference call.
- As your ramble around your computers, the most interesting articles just seem to appear out of nowhere. Don’t resist the urge to take a quick read. Consider this a learning experience and take advantage of the opportunity to expand your knowledge. Besides, its good for conversation.
- Nothing wrong with a posting a quick Facebook update.
- Your favorite gourmet recipe that needs to sauté for hours is now do-able.
- And about your laundry: you always have something clean and ready-to-wear because all you have to do is toss it in the washing machine.
- And last, but definitely not least, that guy who is annoying, distracting and talking to you incessantly about what he had for dinner last night, is no longer in the cubical next to you but thousands of miles away.
Ultimately, it is gratifying to see entire cities and countries band together in a spirit of cooperation and concern for the minor freedoms and luxuries that working from home can provide. Everyone deserves a high-five for uniting in this common resolve. Just remember to stay responsive so that the boss won’t think you’re out picnicking on the beach with your dog. Good luck!
