A lot of being at home + the holiday season = time for an interior design review. The House of Valentina gave us a list of ten (previous) interior design trends that are now making a home look dated. Most are quick, easy and inexpensive fixes or suggestions to keep in mind as you do routine refreshes.
- Signage: We’ve all seen them. Wall plaques that say very nice things such as “Blessed”, “Home is Where the Heart Is”, “Family” but that show their age.
- The Tuscan Look: This trend is being reinvented to move away from the faux concrete wall with cracks to a fresh approach.
- Burnt colors: This would include the oranges, burgundy and hunter greens. It is not a total loss, though, as this pallet makes the ideal accent for a pop of color.
- High gloss floors: The next time your hardwood floors need to be refinished opt out for high gloss in favor of a matte polyurethane instead.
- Multi-level kitchen counters: These two-level counters are usually too high to be comfortable for seating.
- Heavy drapes: Sunshine is in vogue. This means windows that are layered with shades, sheers and heavy drapes need the easy fix of simply removing the drapes to lighten the space both visually and literally.
- Frosted glass light fixtures: Once again, in the interest of creating bright spaces, gold hued and frosted glass fixtures can darken a room.
- Deep woods with wrought iron scrolls: Heavy furniture and touches that people are just not gravitating to anymore.
- Bed in a Bag: Lots of pillows in different sizes that all match the comforter have gone by the wayside. Simply remove some of the pillows. If you do want a decorative pillow, make them the same size and keep it to one layer.
- Themed décor: While these rooms are fun to put together, less is more. The new trend is to display in a room items that are useful. So themes such as nautical with fishing nets and paddles hanging on the walls just crowd the space.
